The Irishman Reviews

It’s brilliant, but best to go in with as few expectations as possible

When I love a movie as much as I love The Irishman, I feel torn. On one hand, I want to review it and rave about it and try to convince others to see it. But then on the other hand, I realise that doing so could set expectations too high, which could then lead to some people getting disappoint (this happens a lot with horror movies that get hype at film festivals and then rejected by disappoint wide audiences, like with The Witch, It Follows, and Hereditary).

Gangster Avengers born for Netflix

This film is super long. Too long to sit in the cinema for as fantastic as it looks. I ran out of snacks, I was so grip I didn’t go to the toilet which meant my bladder was bursting only adding to the tension.

The Last Of Its Kind

I don’t know where to start on this one other than thanking Netflix for being the only distributor to fund this movie so we could see Big screen legends take their last big swing. The set and screen is smaller than I like it to be, it being release on a streaming site but it’s better than never seeing it.

Just amazing

Classic Scorsese . De Niro is the best he’s been for years . Pacino is really magnetic and charming . But for me, Joe Pesci is the standout. Quietly deadly, magnetic , loyal, complicated, its him that will get the Oscar . Saw it at the cinema ( sorry Netflix but I am not watching Scorsese at home ) and it was superb. Oh Anna Paquin is use quite cleverly as well. Good actress . Decent performance Go and see it at the cinema . You will remember the masters returning for one last ride…

To call it “good” is to call DaVinci a finger painter

I’m going to steal something I read from a food critic once-this deserves a zero because it’s so good it’ll ruin everything else for you. And that’s what this masterpiece is to cinema. It’s truly just that effing special. It remind me just how much I miss Pesci. Never in my life has time flown by as quickly as it did watching this. A true joy and a privilege to witness. Well done sirs. Well done.

Weak by any standard but by Scorsese it’s very

Sadly a subpar effort from one of my all time favorite directors. The story is weak (by Scorsese standard) and overly stretched. I can understand the appeal to revisit his trademark Italian gangster genre one more time, but this one feels unnecessary.

The also trademark Scorsese humor is in-existent (except for the painting walls bit). De Niro looks disorient, in the worst physical (hunched over almost the whole movie) and acting shape ever and out of place. Not very surprising, either.

He spent the better part of the last 15 to 20 years doing mock impressions of himself which after the novelty fade end him up in a series of quite dubious productions.

At what distance would it become physically painful to be near a black hole?

Reading about the effects of black holes, its clear one would become stretched, compressed, or just torn to pieces when entering the singularity. But on approach, assuming the transportation could sustain the forces, at what distance would a human start to feel the pain of the force from the black hole?

Ans By pfsico

The answer depends on the mass of the black hole. The larger the black hole, the lower the “tidal force” (that causes the spaghettification) is before you get to the Schwartzschild radius.

The formula for the tensile force felt by a uniform rod (which is not a terrible approximation for a human body, if you just want a rough number) is given in the second sentence here (, and is

F = (G*M*m*L)/(4*r^3),

where M is the mass of the black hole, m is your mass, L is the length of the rod (your height), and r is the distance from you to the black hole. Solving for r given a known force F we have

r_pain = ( (G*M*m*L)/(4*F) ) ^1/3.

Let’s look at two cases, and figure out what radius corresponds to a painful (I’m going to say) 1000 Newton (about 250 lbs) force, and see where that is relative to the Schwarzschild radius, R_s = (2*G*M/c^2).

Using SI units, and rounding to make things easy, we can use

G = 7×10^-11 kg/m/s^2

c = 3 * 10^8 m/s

F = 1000 N,

L = 2 m,

m = 100kg.

If we plug in all those, and M = 10^6 * 2*10^30 kg for a million solar mass black hole at the center of a galaxy, we find the “radius of pain” is

r_pain = 200 million meters or so.

Meanwhile, the Schwarzschild radius is

R_s = 3 billion meters or so.

That is, the Schwarzschild radius is about 15 times bigger than the “radius of pain”.

Now, let’s consider a one solar-mass black hole, the sort that might be formed from a neutron star, or detected in a merger by LIGO. In that case,

r_pain = 2 million meters = 2000 km or so, and

R_s = 3000 meters or so.

That is, the “radius of pain” almost 1000 times as large as the Schwarzschild radius in this case, so you’ll feel it, and more as you fall further in.

Keep this in mind, and be careful when you’re visiting small black holes in the future.

Do common colds or flu strains leave permanent damage similar to what is being found with CoViD-19?

This post has CoViD-19 in the title but is a question regarding the human body and how it handles common colds and flu strains which are commonly received and dealt with throughout a normal life.

Is there any permanent damage caused, or is it simply temporary or none at all? Thanks!

Edit: I had a feeling common colds and flu strains had long-lasting effects, but the fact that I didn’t realize it until I was reminded and clarified by you all is a very important distinction that this isn’t something we think about often. I hope moving forward after CoViD-19, the dangers of simple common illnesses are brought to attention. Myocarditis is something that I have recently learned about and knowing how fatal it can be is something everyone should be aware of.

There’s a generally held strong suspicion that a lot of autoimmune chronic disease is caused by as yet unidentified viruses or bacteria – Most likely ones we’re already aware of. There’s a Nobel prize in finding the links.

For example, there are a few big trials at the moment looking at the link between dementia and chronic cold sores (as opposed to primary herpes, which is harder to do big long term trials on), and whether antivirals can protect against dementia – Would be big if true, particularly as the drugs are cheap.

Edit: To everyone in comments asking if their X infection could have caused Y. This is the internet, someone will come at you with a great anecdote or mechanism telling you that your Y is clearly caused by X. Don’t give in to the temptation to strongly agree, most autoimmune disorders have not been shown to have clear causes at this time. You’re human, you want to see patterns in noise.

Why don’t we kill HIV/ AIDS by killing the immune system?

Alright, so I was prepping a lesson for class, where I need to cover HIV in the workplace.

My question is, since the virus cannot survive without attaching to and replicating through a cell(specifically for HIV, cells with the CD4 molecule) why do we not just use a process such as chemotherapy to kill the cells, stick the patient in a clean room for however long it takes for the virus to die and then restart the immune system through bone-marrow transplants or something that might actually work.

It might be like taking a butchers knife to the patient, I’m just curious if this has been looked into.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, it’s definitely not my field.

What are some things you wish you had known about college before going?

  • That very few people are able to pick an area of study and stick with it throughout their career at age 18. Also that there’s no shame in a trade school. We had “you won’t get a real job without a 4-year degree” crammed down our throats. I have friends that studied to be welders, linemen, etc and they easily earn double what I do.
  • Imposter syndrome is so real. No matter how sure you are of yourself, when you walk into your first seminar everyone is going to seem smarter than you. Feeling like you aren’t good enough or that you’re a fraud is even more prevalent among women and especially women of color, so I’m sure many women here can relate. In the end, it’s important to remember that you earned your spot in college just as much as anyone else did. Whatever you accomplished to get to that point and whatever you do during your college experience is worthy and valid.
  • Parties aren’t all that. When it comes to social life in college, people love to mention parties. Of course, there are some great parties, but most of them involve overplayed music and a whole group of people just standing around.
  • The beginning sucks but it gets better. I thought college was going to be an amazing experience right off the bat. But my first year was riddled with homesickness, loneliness, and stress. It didn’t help that I had a roommate who told me, “if only gets worse,” whenever she saw me crying. But it got better! I adjusted, I made friends, had new experiences, enjoyed classes. The first year is the hardest bc you are adjusting to a whole new lifestyle. There are also weed-out classes if you’re a stem major that you have to get through before getting to the more fun classes. Every semester has been better than the last. Well, until COVID at least, my last year is kinda fucked now, but that’s a whole nother topic lmao…
  • I wish I had known how to cook more healthy and cheap meals. I started getting into cooking in my senior year and I definitely missed out in those first few years.

What did you (WOMEN) do for Eid al-Adha?

We’ll celebrate it tomorrow in my country (Pakistan). I bought a new dress and my mum cooks this DELICIOUS kaleji (liver curry) on the morning of Eid, I can’t wait to eat it. For the past few Eids, I keep suggesting my mum to visit my sister’s grave who died as a baby. I don’t know why, but I wanna include her in our day. This Eid we will go as she promised.

Then in the evening I will visit our neighbors, relatives, family friends, and give them pudding and sacrificial meat (they will do the same). All throughout the 3 days of Eid, starting with the morning tomorrow, poor folks who can’t afford to eat meat rest of the year will come to our house and my mum will give them sacrificial meat equally. We will also be seeking out homeless and give them meat.

For any non-muslim reading this, I wanna clarify that donating of the meat is obligatory on Eid-al-Adha. (if you can afford to sacrifice an animal then there are fixed, equal proportions of meat that you give to relatives, neighbors, and poor people. You can skip out the people who are doing well financially but feeding the ones who have limited means is a must).

I will be going out later in the evening with friends. Will be eating amazing, delicious food the entire Eid and being grateful. Happy Eid everyone.

What compliment do you still remember being given?

Drunk girls give the best compliments And insults And advice You’re on your own if you can’t tell the difference though

First time A group of drunk girls in a bar gave me a hug because I smelled yummy and wanted to smell yummy too.

Second time I was angry once because of a boy. And she thought i was drunk like her, she put her brand new water bottle in my mouth and told me “shhh drink this”

How does alcohol (sanitizer) kill viruses?

Alcohol is a solvent that can dissolve the plasma membrane of viruses and bacteria which is made from phospholipids. It can also denature proteins and further dissolve the contents of the virus.

When the membrane dissolves, the virus stops existing. In labs, our disinfecting alcohol sprays are 70:30 alcohol to water. The water helps the alcohol better dissolve and penetrate through the plasma membrane, so it makes it more effective.

On a related matter, the same principle applies to radio waves and is partly why microwave radio frequencies (WiFi at 2.4 or 5GHz; versus UV light 750 THz~30PHz) are disrupted by walls, where typical FM radio (100MHz) is not very affected at all (absent metal shielding which acts like an antenna.)

The other issue is that they are pushing so much data digitally using reliable methods, so that if a particular part of the message gets lost-in-transit, it has to resend the whole missing part (packet). With uni-directional (broadcast) or unreliable transmissions (missing data ignored and worked around like in streaming or gameplay), it just gets staticky (analog), pixelated (digitally, missing bits), or “jittery.”

A stronger emitter (more output) can penetrate deeper, but comes with problems; high output radio waves (like the microwave oven) or light sources can cause more substantial chemical changes than intended, breaking down the materials on surfaces (think sun-bleaching or cooking a potato), or healthy cells (eyes are especially vulnerable to high-output EM waves).

Finding the right frequency, delivering it accurately and consistently, with as little output as necessary for the given application (e.g, size of decontamination field, durability of infections materials, durability of surfaces, reflectivity) is a challenge of engineering.

Do bosses like Michael Scott actually exist? And if you work/ed for one, what’s your craziest story?

My boss is certainly Michael Scott-esque. When I first started I was essentially Pam as well since I was both receptionist and his assistant to some extent. My favorite story was back when we were prepping for a conference. Some context, he’s terrible with the English language in general and will mangle phrases and descriptions to no end (how the turntables…). So on a group call, he kept talking about wanting a “golden hamster ball” to do giveaways with.

Was raving about how great it would be spinning around while people walked by, all the while everyone on the call was just sitting in confused silence. However, by that point, I had become so good at decoding his nonsense that I knew he was referring to a gold raffle cage and sent him an image privately asking if it’s what he was thinking. To this day he still talks about the fact I can read his mind and must be psychic. And he still refers to it as a hamster ball.

All in all, he’s a pretty nice guy and a solid boss. Hired me based on a gut feeling and has been decent to me ever since. I think I knew it would be a good fit when during the interview he tried to tell me about the four pillars of the company and forgot one. Told me later it was Knowledge.

Do you (WOMEN) ever get the feeling that a friend doesn’t like you anymore? How do you deal with these feelings?

I am someone that has done this a lot. It isn’t that I do not like them anymore but more so that we have both changed so much since the start of those friendships. In high school and college, those friends were friends mostly due to proximity.

Once we weren’t forced to be near each other on a daily basis anymore, I found we had nothing to really talk about. It used to be what was happening around school or with mutual friends but once I was taken out of that, I found I had nothing in common with them.

And it takes time to really get to know someone, we might click at first but then you start to really learn their values and goals, etc and maybe it isn’t aligned quite the same as yours. Even if it is aligned now, there is a chance it will change in 5 years because we are always growing!

Lately, I have noticed that the older I get the shorter my energy meter gets… I’m practically in bed by 8 pm. With any free time, I only want to spend that energy with family and people I click with the most. For these reasons, I don’t really go out of my way to reach out to most friends anymore because it is difficult to maintain so many friendships
